Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 60: Kausalyā Continues to Lament
Text 2.60.20
गजं वा वीक्ष्य सिंह वा व्याघ्रं वा वनमाश्रिता।
नाहारयति संत्रासं बाहू रामस्य संश्रिता॥
gajaṁ vā vīkṣya siṁhaṁ vā vyāghraṁ vā vanam āśritā
nāhārayati santrāsaṁ bāhū rāmasya saṁśritā
gajam vā = an elephant; vīkṣya = upon seeing; siṁham = lion; vā = or; vyāghram = tiger; vā = or; vanam = to a forest; āśritā = or upon going; na āhārayati = she is not overwhelmed; santrāsam = by panic; bāhū = of the two arms; rāmasya = of Śrī Rāma; saṁśritā = for she has taken full shelter.
Upon seeing an elephant or lion or tiger, or upon going to a forest, she is not overwhelmed by panic for she has taken full shelter of the two arms of Śrī Rāma.
1 In the commentary, this sentence appears prior to the previous sentence.
An elephant has a huge body that generates fear merely upon seeing it, not upon hearing about it. A lion however considers such an elephant to be as insignificant as a [blade of] grass. A tiger is more ferocious than an elephant as it is a violent creature [by nature]. A forest generates fear even without a lion and so on. Even when Sītā-devī is deep within a forest, she does not even experience slight fear which is natural to women. Nāhārayati indicates that she doesn’t even pretend to be frightened.1 The reason for Sītā-devī’s lack of fear is her shelter—the two arms of Śrī Rāma. Are those within metal gates frightened [of anything outside those gates]?
NOTE. This is an important verse wherein Mother Sītā-devī demonstrates that if we take full shelter of the Supreme Lord, there is absolutely no question of being frightened of anything or anyone, no matter how frightening and aggressive it might be.
In this regard, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.6.7 explicitly states:
vikramo bhūr bhuvaḥ svaś ca kṣemasya śaraṇasya ca
sarva-kāma-varasyāpi hareś caraṇa āspadam
“Thus the forward steps of the Lord are the shelter for the upper, lower and heavenly planets, as well as for all that we need. His lotus feet serve as protection from all kinds of fear.”
In his purport to this verse, Prabhupāda writes:
For absolute protection from all sorts of fear, as well as for all our needs of life, we must take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord, not only in this planet but also in all the upper, lower and heavenly planets. This absolute dependence on the lotus feet of the Lord is called pure devotional service, and it is directly hinted at within this passage. No one should have any kind of doubt in this matter, nor should one be inclined to seek the help of any other demigods, because all of them are dependent on Him only.
