विधूय शोकं परिहृष्टमानसा महर्षियाते पथि सुव्यवस्थिताः।
वने रता वन्यफलाशनाः पितुः शुभां प्रतिज्ञां परिपालयन्ति ते॥
vidhūya śokaṁ parihṛṣṭa-mānasā
maha-rṣi-yāte pathi suvyavasthitāḥ
vane ratā vanya-phalāśanāḥ pituḥ
śubhāṁ pratijñāṁ paripālayanti te
vidhūya = having given up; śokam = distress; parihṛṣṭa-mānasāḥ = with delighted minds; mahā-ṛṣi-yāte = followed by the great ṛṣis; pathi = on the path; suvyavasthitāḥ = are well-intent; vane = in the forest; ratāḥ = happy; vanya-phala-aśanāḥ = eating fruits and roots in the forest; pituḥ = of their father; śubhām = the auspicious; pratijñām = promise; paripālayanti = they carry out; te = they.
Having given up distress, with delighted minds they are well-intent on the path followed by the great ṛṣis. Happy in the forest, eating fruits and roots in the forest, they carry out the auspicious promise of their father.1
1 Regarding “their father”: The father-in-law is meant to be respected like one’s father. So Daśaratha is also Sītā-devī’s father.
