Chapter 61: Kausalyā Condemns Daśaratha in Extreme Distress
Text 2.61.14
ब्राह्मणेष्वपि तृप्तेषु पश्चाद्धोक्तुं द्विजर्षभाः।
नाभ्युपैतुमलं प्राज्ञाः शृङ्गच्छेदमिवर्षभाः॥
brāhmaṇeṣv api tṛpteṣu paścād bhoktuṁ dvija-rṣabhāḥ
nābhyupaitum alaṁ prājñāḥ śṛṅga-cchedam iva rṣabhāḥ
brāhmaṇeṣu = even after the brāhmaṇas; api = even; tṛpteṣu = are satisfied; paścāt = previously; bhoktum = who ate; dvija-ṛṣabhāḥ = and excellent brāhmaṇas are; na abhyupaitum alam = unable to eat later; prājñāḥ = the learned; śṛṅga-chedam = their horns being cut; iva = just as; ṛṣabhāḥ = bulls cannot accept.
Even after the brāhmaṇas who ate previously are satisfied, the learned and excellent brāhmaṇas are unable to eat later just as bulls cannot accept their horns being cut.
Śṛga-cchedam also refers to grass whose edges are eaten by other bulls. Just as bulls cannot accept grass whose edges are eaten by other bulls, [the learned brāhmaṇas are unable to eat what has remained after the previous batch of brāhmaṇas eat].
