Chapter 61: Kausalyā Condemns Daśaratha in Extreme Distress
Text 2.61.29

इमां गिरं दारुणशब्दसंश्रितां निशम्य राजापि मुमोह दुःखितः।
ततः स शोकं प्रविवेश पार्थिवः स्वदुष्कृतं चापि पुनस्तदा स्मरन्॥

imāṁ giraṁ dāruṇa-śabda-saṁśritāṁ
niśamya rājāpi mumoha duḥkhitaḥ
tataḥ sa śokaṁ praviveśa pārthivaḥ
sva-duṣkṛtaṁ cāpi punas tadā smaran

imām giram = speak these; dāruṇa-śabda-saṁśritām = terrible words; niśamya = hearing his wife; rājā api = the king; mumoha = became bewildered; duḥkhitaḥ = and morose; tataḥ = then; saḥ = the; śokam = in anguish; praviveśa = became absorbed; pārthivaḥ = king; sva-duṣkṛtam ca api = about his previous sinful activity; punaḥ = again; tadā smaran = while thinking.

Hearing his wife speak these terrible words, the king became bewildered and morose. Then the king again became absorbed in anguish while thinking about his previous sinful activities.

The king was considering, “What sinful activity did I perform that has brought about such misery [in me]?”
