Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 62: Kausalyā Pacifies Daśaratha
Text 2.62.14
जानामि धर्मं धर्मज्ञ त्वां जाने सत्यवादिनम्।
पुत्रशोकार्तया तत्तु मया किमपि भाषितम्॥
jānāmi dharmaṁ dharmajña tvāṁ jāne satya-vādinam
putra-śokārtayā tat tu mayā kim api bhāṣitam
jānāmi = I know; dharmam = dharma; dharmajña = O knower of dharma; tvām = you; jāne = I know that; satya-vādinam = speak the truth; putra-śoka-ārtayā = anguished by the sorrow for our son; tat1 tu = but; mayā = I; kim api = something thoughtlessly and inappropriately; bhāṣitam = have spoken.
O knower of dharma, I know dharma. I know that you speak the truth. But anguished by sorrow for our son, I have spoken something thoughtlessly and inappropriately.
1 Technical note: tat bhāṣitam.
She implied, “Please forgive me.”
NOTE. Kausalyā-devī has now agreed to practice the austerity of speech some of whose items are “speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others.” (Bhagavad-gītā 17.15)
