Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.23

तस्मिंस्तत्राहमेकान्ते रात्रौ विवृतकार्मुकः।
तत्राहं संवृतं वन्यं हतवांस्तीरमागतम्।
अन्यं चापि मृगं हिंस्रं शब्दं श्रुत्वाभ्युपागतम्॥

tasmiṁs tatrāham ekānte rātrau vivṛta-kārmukaḥ
tatrāhaṁ saṁvṛtaṁ vanyaṁ hatavāṁs tīram āgatam
anyaṁ cāpi mṛgaṁ hiṁsraṁ śabdaṁ śrutvābhyupāgatam

tasmin = on that; tatra = there; aham = I; eka-ante = lonely; rātrau = night; vivṛta-kārmukaḥ = took out my bow; tatra = there; aham = I; saṁvṛtam = that were hiding; vanyam = forest creatures; hatavān = killed; tīram = to the bank; āgatam = and that had come; anyam = other; ca api = as well as; mṛgam = beasts; hiṁsram = fierce; śabdam = the sound; śrutvā = upon hearing; abhyupāgatam = that had arrived.

On that lonely night there, I took out my bow. I killed forest creatures that were hiding and that had come to the bank, as well as other fierce beasts that had arrived there upon hearing the sound.
