Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.24

अथान्धकारे त्वश्रौषं जले कुम्भस्य पूर्यतः।
अचक्षुर्विषये घोषं वारणस्येव नर्दतः॥

athāndhakāre tv aśrauṣaṁ jale kumbhasya pūryataḥ
acakṣur-viṣaye ghoṣaṁ vāraṇasyeva nardataḥ

atha = and then; andhakāre tu = in that darkness; aśrauṣam = I heard the sound; jale = with water; kumbhasya = of a pot; pūryataḥ = being filled; acakṣuḥ-viṣaye = which I could not see; ghoṣam = that sound; vāraṇasya = of an elephant; iva = resembled; nardataḥ = the sound.

And then I heard the sound of a pot being filled with water in that darkness which I could not see. That sound resembled the sound of an elephant.
