अमुञ्चं निशितं बाणमहमाशीविषोपमम्।
तत्र वागुषसि व्यक्ता प्रादुरासीद्वनौकसः।
हाहेति पततस्तोये बाणाभिहतमर्मणः॥
amuncaṁ niśitaṁ bāṇam aham āśī-viṣopamam
tatra vāg uṣasi vyaktā prādurāsīd vanaukasaḥ
hā heti patatas toye bāṇābhihata-marmaṇaḥ
amuncam = [thus] released; niśitam = a sharp; bāṇam = arrow; aham = I; āśī-viṣa-upamam = that was like the poison of a venomous snake; tatra = and then at that time; vāk = sound; uṣasi = in the early morning hours; vyaktā = the distinct; prādurāsīt = was heard; vana-okasaḥ = of a forest dwelling man; hā hā iti = he cried, “alas, alas’; patataḥ = while falling; toye = into the water; bāṇa-abhihata-marmaṇaḥ = his heart having being pierced by [my] arrow.
[Thus] I released a sharp arrow that was like the poison of a venomous snake and then at that time in the early morning hours the distinct sound of a forest dwelling man was heard while falling into the water, his heart having being pierced by [my] arrow. He cried, “Alas, alas!”
The person, a man living in the forest, was an ascetic.
