Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.27
तस्मिन्निपतिते बाणे वागभूत्तत्र मानुषी।
कथमस्मद्विधे शस्त्रं निपतेत्तु तपस्विनि॥
tasmin nipatite bāṇe vāg abhūt tatra mānuṣī
katham asmad-vidhe śastram nipatet tu tapasvini
tasmin = on him; nipatite = fell him; bāṇe = when that arrow; vāk abhūt = I heard the voice; tatra = there; mānuṣī = of a man; katham = how can; asmat-vidhe = like me; śastram = a weapon; nipatet tu = pierce; tapasvini = an ascetic.
When that arrow fell on him, I heard a human voice of a man there, “How can a weapon pierce an ascetic like me?
1 Ascetics absorbed in the practices for spiritual realization do not have enemies in the civilized environment of varnāśrama-dharma.
Daśaratha now relates that a human voice spoke more distinctly. Asmad vidhe (“like me”) indicates that man did not have any enemy.1
