Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.43
न नूनं तपसो वास्ति फलयोगः श्रुतस्य वा।
पिता यन्मां न जानाति शयानं पतितं भुवि॥
na nūnaṁ tapaso vāsti phala-yogaḥ śrutasya vā
pitā yan māṁ na jānāti śayānaṁ patitaṁ bhuvi
na = not; nūnam = certainly; tapasaḥ vā = my austerity; asti phala-yogaḥ = has yielded any result; śrutasya = learning; vā = and; pitā = my father; yat = because; mām = that I; na = does not; jānāti = know; śayānam = lay; patitam = fallen; bhuvi = on the ground [now].
Certainly, my austerity and learning has not yielded any result because my father does not know that I lay fallen on the ground [now].1
1 It is implied that if one’s son has begun to reap the result of his austerities and Vedic study, his father will know when his son has died.
