Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.45
पितुस्त्वमेव मे गत्वा शीघ्रमाचक्ष्व राघव।
न त्वामनुदहेत्क्रुद्धो वनं वह्निरिवैधितः॥
pitus tvam eva me gatvā śīghram ācakṣva rāghava
na tvām anudahet kruddho vanaṁ vahnir ivaidhitaḥ
pituḥ = father; tvam1 eva me = to my; gatvā = go; śīghram = quickly; ācakṣva = and describe [what took place]; rāghava = Rāghava; na = lest; tvām = you; anudahet = he burns up; kruddhaḥ = in anger; vanam = a forest; vahniḥ = fire [burns up]; iva = just as; edhitaḥ = an ignited.
Rāghava, quickly go to my father and describe [what took place] lest he burns you up in anger just as an ignited fire [burns up] a forest.
1 Technical note: tvam ācakṣva.
Because he has addressed Daśaratha as Rāghava, it is inferred that Daśaratha had often traveled on the banks of Sarayū in the past for hunting and that this young ascetic knew him [since then]. He says that his father would not burn up Daśaratha [if he truthfully recounted everything that had happened]; otherwise he would burn up [Daśaratha].
