Chapter 64: Daśaratha Gives up his Life in Remembrance of Lord Rāma
Text 2.64.8
यन्निमित्तमिदं तात सलिले क्रीडितं त्वया।
उत्कण्ठिता ते मातेयं प्रविश क्षिप्रमाश्रमम्॥
yan-nimittam idaṁ tāta salile krīḍitaṁ tvayā
utkaṇṭhitā te māteyaṁ praviśa kṣipram āśramam
yat-nimittam = why did; idam = tell me this; tāta = dear child; salile = in the water for so long; krīḍitam = sport; tvayā = you; utkaṇṭhitā = had become anxious; te = your; mātā = mother; iyam = the; praviśa = enter; kṣipram = quickly; āśramam = āśrama.
“Dear child, tell me this: why did you sport in the water for so long? Your mother had become anxious. Quickly enter the āśrama.
In some manuscripts, yan na dattam appears instead of yan-nimittam and it indicates the following thought of the sage: “You have not given us water to drink and [instead simply] sported in the water [of the river]!”
