या गतिः सर्वसाधूनां स्वाध्यायात्तपसा च या।
या भूमिदस्याहिताग्नेरेकपत्नीव्रतस्य च॥
गोसहस्रप्रदातॄणां या या गुरुभृतामपि।
देहन्यासकृतां या च तां गतिं गच्छ पुत्रक॥
yā gatiḥ sarva-sādhūnāṁ svādhyāyāt tapasā ca yā
yā bhūmidasyāhitāgner eka-patnī-vratasya ca
go-sahasra-pradātṝṇāṁ yā yā gurubhṛtām api
deha-nyāsa-kṛtāṁ yā ca tām gatiṁ gaccha putraka
yā = that; gatiḥ = the destination; sarva-sādhūnām = of all great saints; svādhyāyāt = can be attained through Vedic study; tapasā = austerity; ca = and; yā = that; yā = the destination; bhūmidasya = can be attained by giving land in charity; āhita-agneḥ = by performing fire sacrifices; eka-patnī-vratasya = by accepting the vow of having only one wife; ca = and; go-sahasra-pradātṝṇām = of those who give in charity thousands of cows; yā = the destination; yā = the destination; gurubhṛtām api = of those who serve their guru; deha-nyāsa-kṛtām = of those who give up their bodies [voluntarily and in accordance with the scriptures]; yā ca = the destination; tām = that; gatim = destination; gaccha = attain; putraka = my dear son.
My dear son, attain the destination of all great saints, the destination that can be attained through Vedic study and austerity, the destination that can be attained by giving land in charity, by performing fire sacrifices, by accepting the vow of having only one wife, the destination of those who give in charity thousands of cows, the destination of those who serve their guru and the destination of those who give up their bodies [voluntarily and in accordance with the scriptures].
Eka-patnī-vratasya ca (“the vow of having only one wife”) refers to those who accept the vow of having only one wife who is favorable to him and who has [at least] one son.
Deha-nyāsa-kṛtām (“those who give up their bodies”) refers to those who [voluntarily] give up their bodies at the final stage of their life and so on. It also refers to those who give up their bodies in water, for instance, in the confluence of Gaṅgā and Yamunā, or in fire with the resolute determination to attain a superior destination in their next life.
