तमग्निमिव संशान्तमम्बुहीनमिवार्णवम्।
हतप्रभमिवादित्यं स्वर्गस्थं प्रेक्ष्य पार्थिवम्॥
कौसल्या बाष्पपूर्णाक्षी विविधं शोककर्शिता।
उपगृह्य शिरो राज्ञः कैकेयीं प्रत्यभाषत॥
tam agnim iva saṁśāntam ambu-hīnam ivārṇavam
hata-prabham ivādityaṁ svargasthaṁ prekṣya pārthivam
kausalyā bāṣpa-pūrṇākṣī vividhaṁ śoka-karśitā
upagṛhya śiro rājñaḥ kaikeyīṁ pratyabhāṣata
tam = that; agnim iva = he was like a fire; saṁśāntam = had been extinguished; ambu-hīnam = devoid of water; iva = like; arṇavam = the ocean; hata-prabham = devoid of illumination; iva = and like; ādityam = the sun; svargastham = who had departed to Svarga; prekṣya = upon seeing; pārthivam = the king; kausalyā = Kausalyā; bāṣpa-pūrṇa-akṣī = Kausalyā’s eyes brimmed with tears; vividham śoka-karśitā = she was weak due to much lamentation; upagṛhya = placed on her lap; śiraḥ = head; rājñaḥ = his; kaikeyīm = Kaikeyī [the following]; pratyabhāṣata = she told.
Upon seeing the king who had departed to Svarga, Kausalyā placed his head on her lap. He was like a fire that had been extinguished, like the ocean devoid of water and like the sun devoid of illumination. Kausalyā’s eyes brimmed with tears and she was weak due to much lamentation. She told Kaikeyī [the following].
