Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 66: Daśaratha’s Ministers Preserve his Body
Text 2.66.7

अनियोगे नियुक्तेन राज्ञा रामं विवासितम्।
सभार्यं जनकः श्रुत्वा परितप्स्यत्यहं यथा॥

aniyoge niyuktena rājñā rāmaṁ vivāsitam
sabhāryaṁ janakaḥ śrutvā paritapsyaty ahaṁ yathā

aniyoge = by an inappropriate promise; niyuktena = who had been obliged; rājñā = by the king; rāmam = Rāma; vivāsitam = has been exiled; sabhāryam = with His wife; janakaḥ = King Janaka of Videha; śrutvā = upon hearing that; paritapsyati = will suffer in distress; aham yathā = like me.

Upon hearing that Rāma has been exiled with His wife by the king who had been obliged by an inappropriate promise, King Janaka of Videha will suffer in distress like me.

The king had been obliged by an inappropriate promise because at the time of awarding the benedictions Kaikeyī did not specify what she had wanted but she had the king arrange for Bharata’s coronation and Rāma’s exile.
