Chapter 66: Daśaratha’s Ministers Preserve his Body
Text 2.66.16
तैलद्रोण्यां तु सचिवैः शायितं तं नराधिपम्।
हा मृतोऽयमिति ज्ञात्वा स्त्रियस्ताः पर्यदेवयन्॥
taila-droṇyāṁ tu sacivaiḥ śāyitaṁ taṁ narādhipam
hā mṛto ’yam iti jñātvā striyas tāḥ paryadevayan
taila-droṇyām tu = in a tub of oil; sacivaiḥ = by the royal secretaries; śāyitam = was placed; tam nara-adhipam = the king; hā = alas; mṛtaḥ = dead; ayam iti = he is; jñātvā = having come to know that; striyaḥ tāḥ = the women surrounded it; paryadevayan = and cried once again.
Having come to know that the king was placed in a tub of oil by the royal secretaries, the women surrounded it and cried once again, “Alas! He is dead!”
The ladies did not see the king being placed in the tub of oil. [They only got to know about that now.]
