Chapter 71: Bharata Reaches Ayodhyā
Text 2.71.22

अयोध्यायां पुरा शब्दः श्रूयते तुमुलो महान्।
समन्तान्नरनारीणां तमद्य न श्रृणोम्यहम्॥

ayodhyāyāṁ purā śabdaḥ śrūyate tumulo mahān
samantān nara-nārīṇāṁ tam adya na śṛṇomy aham

ayodhyāyām = Ayodhyā; purā = in the past; śabdaḥ = noise; śrūyate = could be heard; tumulaḥ = tumultuous; mahān = a loud; samantāt = all over; nara-nārīṇām = of men and women [talking]; tam = that [sound]; adya = but today; na = don’t; śṛṇomi = hear; aham = I.

A loud noise of men and women [talking] could be heard all over Ayodhyā in the past. But today I don’t hear that [sound].

GLOSS. [This verse means:] “In the past, I used to hear a loud noise of men and women [talking] all over Ayodhyā. But today I don’t hear that [sound].”
