उद्यानानि पुरा भान्ति मत्तप्रमुदितानि च।
जनानां रतिसंयोगेष्वत्यन्तगुणवन्ति च॥
तान्येतान्यद्य पश्यामि निरानन्दानि सर्वशः।
स्रस्तपर्णैरनुपथं विक्रोशद्भिरिव द्रुमैः॥
udyānāni purā bhānti matta-pramuditāni ca
janānāṁ rati-saṁyogeṣv atyanta-guṇavanti ca
tāny etāny adya paśyāmi nirānandāni sarvaśaḥ
srasta-parṇair anupathaṁ vikrośadbhir iva drumaiḥ
udyānāni = gardens; purā = in the past; bhānti = shone; matta-pramuditāni ca = they were filled with excitement and delight; janānām = for people’s; rati-saṁyogeṣu = conjugal sports; atyanta-guṇavanti ca = were extremely fit; tāni = they; etāni = these; adya = but today; paśyāmi = I notice that; nirānandāni = are devoid of joy; sarvaśaḥ = all of them; srasta-parṇaiḥ = whose leaves have fallen off; anupatham = in all pathways; vikrośadbhiḥ iva = and which seem to be crying in sorrow; drumaiḥ = with trees.
These gardens shone in the past. They were filled with excitement and delight. They were extremely fit for people’s conjugal sports. But today I notice that all of them are devoid of joy, with trees whose leaves have fallen off in all pathways and which seem to be crying in sorrow.
The gardens were formerly filled with excitement: parrots, kokilas, bees and so on [used to be] excited by relishing the fruits, sprouts and honey [from the flowers of the trees]. The gardens were formerly filled with delight: water basins had been constructed around their roots, the desires of the the plants during their budding [season were fulfilled] and they were sprinkled [with sufficient water]. Formerly the gardens were extremely fit [for people’s conjugal sports]: they had a variety of flowers, bowers of creepers, oblong lakes, play hills and so on.
Bharata noticed that all of that was no more.
