dvāreṇa vaijayantena = the city’s western gate known as Vaijayanta; prāviśat = He entered; śrānta-vāhanaḥ = His horses were tired [by now]; dvāḥsthaiḥ = the gatekeepers; utthāya = got up [out of respect]; vijayam = victorious [sojourn]; pṛṣṭaḥ = inquired about His; taiḥ sahitaḥ yayau = and followed [Him as] He proceeded [inside the city].
He entered the city’s western gate known as Vaijayanta. His horses were tired [by now]. The gatekeepers got up [out of respect], inquired about His victorious [sojourn] and followed [Him as] He proceeded [inside the city].1
1 They inquired about His victorious sojourn, that is, they asked Him if His journey to Kekaya was successful. In other words, they inquired if He had fulfilled the purpose of His visit.
The syllable re here appears in the Gāyatrī-mantra. We have encountered 5,000 verses [of the Rāmāyaṇa so far].
