Chapter 71: Bharata Reaches Ayodhyā
Text 2.71.38

बलिकर्मविहीनानि धूपसंमोदनेन च।
अनाशितकुटुम्बानि प्रभाहीनजनानि च।
अलक्ष्मीकानि पश्यामि कुटुम्बिभवनान्यहम्॥

bali-karma-vihīnāni dhūpa-sammodanena ca
anāśita-kuṭumbāni prabhā-hīna-janāni ca
alakṣmīkāni paśyāmi kuṭumbi-bhavanāny aham

bali-karma-vihīnāni = the homes of family men devoid of sacrificial offerings; dhūpa-sammodanena = the fragrance of [auspicious] smoke; ca = and; anāśita-kuṭumbāni = their family members haven’t been fed; prabhā-hīna-janāni = they are devoid of lustrous people; ca = and; alakṣmīkāni = are devoid of prosperity; paśyāmi = see; kuṭumbi-bhavanāni = the homes [themselves]; aham = I.

I see the homes of family men devoid of sacrificial offerings and the fragrance of [auspicious] smoke. Their family members haven’t been fed and they are devoid of lustrous people. The homes [themselves] are devoid of prosperity.

The family members hadn’t been fed because those who fed the family members didn’t endeavor to cook [in the first place] for they were overcome by distress.
