Chapter 72: Kaikeyī Informs Bharata About Daśaratha’s Death
Text 2.72.15
या गतिः सर्वभूतानां तां गतिं ते पिता गतः।
राजा महात्मा तेजस्वी यायजूकः सतां गतिः॥
yā gatiḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ tāṁ gatiṁ te pitā gataḥ
rājā mahātmā tejasvī yāyajūkaḥ satāṁ gatiḥ
yā gatiḥ = which is [attained]; sarva-bhūtānām = by all living creatures; tām gatim = the destination; te = Your; pitā = father; gataḥ = attained; rājā = the king; mahā-ātmā = was a great soul; tejasvī = powerful; yāyajūkaḥ = habituated to performing sacrifice 1; satām = for saints; gatiḥ = and a shelter.
Your father attained the destination which is [attained] by all living creatures. The king was a great soul, powerful, habituated to performing sacrifice and a shelter for saints.
1 But she failed in her endeavor.
She spoke about [Daśaratha’s] death in gentle words to prevent Bharata from becoming distressed.1
GLOSS. Yā gatiḥ indicates that Queen Kaikeyī intended to tell Bharata that His father had given up his body to attain his destined destination.
