Chapter 72: Kaikeyī Informs Bharata About Daśaratha’s Death
Text 2.72.28

तदिदं ह्यन्यथा भूतं व्यवदीर्णं मनो मम।
पितरं यो न पश्यामि नित्यं प्रियहिते रतम्॥

tad idaṁ hy anyathā-bhūtaṁ vyavadīrṇaṁ mano mama
pitaraṁ yo na paśyāmi nityaṁ priya-hite ratam

tat idam hi anyathā-bhūtam = but something else has taken place here; vyavadīrṇam = shattered [while thinking of]; manaḥ = My heart is; mama = My; pitaram = father; yaḥ = who; na = never; paśyāmi = I can see [anymore]; nityam = ever; priya-hite = which would please and benefit Me; ratam = and who was absorbed in doing that.

“But something else has taken place here. My heart is shattered [while thinking of] My father who I can never ever see [anymore] and who was absorbed in doing that which would please and benefit Me.1

1 Affection is symptomized by the endeavor to please and benefit the object of affection.
