Chapter 72: Kaikeyī Informs Bharata About Daśaratha’s Death
Text 2.72.39
तच्छ्रुत्वा विषसादैव द्वितीयाप्रियशंसनात्।
विषण्णवदनो भूत्वा भूयः पप्रच्छ मातरम्॥
tac chrutvā viṣasādaiva dvitīyāpriya-śaṁsanāt
viṣaṇṇa-vadano bhūtvā bhūyaḥ papraccha mātaram
tat = her words; śrutvā = upon hearing; viṣasāda eva = Bharata became dejected; dvitīya-apriya-śaṁsanāt = describing the second unhappy news; viṣaṇṇa-vadanaḥ bhūtvā = with a sad face; bhūyaḥ = again; papraccha = He asked; mātaram = His mother [as follows].
Bharata became dejected upon hearing her words describing the second unhappy news. With a sad face, He again asked His mother [as follows].
The first unhappy news concerned the king’s death. Rāma’s departure to another place was the second unhappy news.
