Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 72: Kaikeyī Informs Bharata About Daśaratha’s Death
Text 2.72.41
तथा पृष्टा यथातत्त्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे।
मातास्य युगपद्वाक्यं विप्रियं प्रियशङ्कया॥
tathā pṛṣṭā yathā-tattvam ākhyātum upacakrame
mātāsya yugapad vākyaṁ vipriyaṁ priya-śaṅkayā
tathā pṛṣṭā = when He asked her thus; yathā-tattvam ākhyātum upacakrame = began to truthfully relate the facts; mātā = mother; asya = His; yugapat = both; vākyam vipriyam = in displeasing words; priya-śaṅkayā = that she thought would please Him 2.
When He asked her thus, His mother began to truthfully relate both the facts in displeasing words that she thought would please Him.
In some manuscripts, yathā cāyam appears instead of yathā-tatham. [The meaning of the text is the same.]
Kaikeyī described Rāma’s exile [but] she thought that Bharata would become happy by hearing about it.
Yugapad. Kaikeyī spoke about [Rāma’s exile] while speaking about the king’s death. She will tell Bharata in text 49 that she had asked His father for the kingdom for Bharata and Rāma’s exile. Thus she related both the facts.
