Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 73: Bharata Decides to Bring Rāma Back
Text 2.73.17
सोऽहं कथमिमं भारं महाधुर्यसमुद्धृतम्।
दम्यो धुरमिवासाद्य वहेयं केन चौजसा॥
so ’haṁ katham imaṁ bhāraṁ mahā-dhurya-samuddhṛtam
damyo dhuram ivāsādya vaheyaṁ kena caujasā
saḥ aham = I; katham = how; imam = to this; bhāram = heavy; mahā-dhurya-samuddhṛtam = carried by a great bull; damyaḥ = a tender calf 1; dhuram = burden; iva = who resemble; āsādya = that has been brought; vaheyam = can carry it; kena = with whose; ca = and; ojasā = support [can I do it] 2.
How can I who resemble a tender calf that has been brought to this heavy burden carried by a great bull carry it? And with whose support [can I do it]?
This explains text 15 with an example.
The “heavy burden” of running the kingdom was formerly carried by Bharata’s wise father.
