Chapter 74: Bharata Condemns Kaikeyī
Text 2.74.9
न त्वमश्वपतेः कन्या धर्मराजस्य धीमतः।
राक्षसी तत्र जातासि कुलप्रध्वंसिनी पितुः॥
na tvam aśvapateḥ kanyā dharma-rājasya dhīmataḥ
rākṣasī tatra jātāsi kula-pradhvaṁsinī pituḥ
na = are not; tvam = you; aśvapateḥ = king of Kekaya; kanyā = the daughter; dharma-rājasya = a king predominated by [a consideration of] dharma; dhīmataḥ = of the intelligent; rākṣasī = a rākṣasī; tatra = to him; jātā = born; asi = you are; kula-pradhvaṁsinī = you have destroyed dynasty; pituḥ = My father’s.
You are not the daughter of the intelligent king of Kekaya, a king predominated by [a consideration of] dharma. You are a rākṣasī born to him. You have destroyed My father’s dynasty!
“You are not the daughter of the King of Kekaya” means “You are not fit to be a daughter in his family.”
Why did Bharata speak like this? He states that in the next verse.
