Chapter 74: Bharata Condemns Kaikeyī
Text 2.74.23
शान्तं पापं न वः किञ्चित्कुतश्चिदमराधिप।
अहं तु मग्नौ शोचामि स्वपुत्रौ विषमे स्थितौ॥
śāntaṁ pāpaṁ na vaḥ kiñcit kutaścid amarādhipa
ahaṁ tu magnau śocāmi sva-putrau viṣame sthitau
śāntam pāpam = may inauspiciousness be dispelled; na = no; vaḥ = for any of you; kiñcit = there is danger; kutaścit = from anyone; amara-adhipa = O ruler of the immortals; aham = I; tu = but; magnau = they are immersed in distress; śocāmi = am lamenting; sva-putrau = about my two sons; viṣame sthitau = and in a crisis.
May inauspiciousness be dispelled! O ruler of the immortals, there is no danger from anyone for any of you. But I am lamenting about my two sons. They are immersed in distress and in a crisis.
Śāntaṁ pāpam (“may inauspiciousness be dispelled”) is a standard expression to remove the inauspiciousness caused by hearing something inappropriate.
