Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī
Text 2.75.14
कामं वा स्वयमेवाद्य तत्र मां नेतुमर्हसि।
यत्रासौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः पुत्रो मे तप्यते तपः॥
kāmaṁ vā svayam evādya tatra māṁ netum arhasi
yatrāsau puruṣa-vyāghraḥ putro me tapyate tapaḥ
kāmam vā = otherwise; svayam eva = personally; adya = today; tatra = to the place; mām = me; netum = take; arhasi = You should; yatra = where; asau = that; puruṣa-vyāghraḥ = prince; putraḥ = son; me = my; tapyate = is performing; tapaḥ = austerities.
Otherwise today You should personally take me to the place where that prince, my son, is performing austerities.1
1 “Otherwise” means “In case You disagree with Your mother Kaikeyī, You conduct the final rites and take me to Rāma.”
She then anticipated that Bharata might ask, “But what power do I have to send you [to the forest]?” and spoke the next verse.
