Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī
Text 2.75.44

यदग्निदायके पापं यत्पापं गुरुतल्पगे।
मित्रद्रोहे च यत्पापं तत्पापं प्रतिपद्यताम्॥

yad agni-dāyake pāpaṁ yat pāpaṁ guru-talpage
mitra-drohe ca yat pāpaṁ tat pāpaṁ pratipadyatām

yat = the; agni-dāyake = for setting fire; pāpam = sinful reaction; yat = the; pāpam = sinful reaction; guru-talpage = for engaging in sex with his guru’s wife; mitra-drohe = betraying his friend; ca = and; yat = the; pāpam = sinful reaction; tat pāpam = these sinful reactions; pratipadyatām = may he attain.

May he attain these sinful reactions—the sinful reaction for setting fire, the sinful reaction for engaging in sex with his guru’s wife and the sinful reaction for betraying his friend.1

1 “Guru” in this context refers to (1) one’s father, (2) teachers, especially those who initiate one into or instruct one about spiritual life, and (3) men who are superior by relation and age. See footnote to text 29 in this chapter.
