Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī
Text 2.75.48
बहुपुत्रो दरिद्रश्च ज्वररोगसमन्वितः।
स भूयात्सततं क्लेशी यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥
bahu-putro daridraś ca jvara-roga-samanvitaḥ
sa bhūyāt satataṁ kleśī yasyāryo ’numate gataḥ
bahu-putraḥ = have many sons; daridraḥ = poor; ca = and; jvara-roga-samanvitaḥ = become afflicted by fever and diseases; saḥ = he; bhūyāt = may be; satatam = always; kleśī = be in difficulty; yasya = whose; āryaḥ = noble Rāma; anumate = with consent; gataḥ = has departed [to the forest].
May he who consents to the noble Rāma’s departure [to the forest] have many sons, be poor, become afflicted by fever and diseases, and always be in difficulty.1
Bahu-putro daridraś ca: If one is rich and has many sons, he is not miserable. And if one is poor and has no son, he is not very distressed because taking care of such a family is not very distressing.1
