Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 76: Bharata Performs the Final Rites for Daśaratha
Text 2.76.3

वसिष्ठस्य वचः श्रुत्वा भरतो धारणां गतः।
प्रेतकार्याणि सर्वाणि कारयामास धर्मवित्॥

vasiṣṭhasya vacaḥ śrutvā bharato dhāraṇāṁ gataḥ
preta-kāryāṇi sarvāṇi kārayām āsa dharmavit

vasiṣṭhasya = Vasiṣṭha’s; vacaḥ = words; śrutvā = upon hearing; bharataḥ = Bharata; dhāraṇām gataḥ = became composed in mind 1; preta-kāryāṇi = the final rites performed; sarvāṇi = all; kārayām āsa = and had; dharmavit = the knower of dharma.

Upon hearing Vasiṣṭha’s words, the knower of dharma Bharata became composed in mind and had all the final rites performed.

This is a summary description [of what will now be described in detail].

GLOSS. In some manuscripts dharaṇīm appears instead of dhāraṇām indicating that Bharata offered eightfold obeisances unto Vasiṣṭha because, it is implied, He saw the sage only then.
