Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 76: Bharata Performs the Final Rites for Daśaratha
Text 2.76.20
प्रसव्यं चापि तं चक्रुर्ऋत्विजोऽग्निचितं नृपम्।
स्त्रियश्च शोकसंतप्ताः कौसल्याप्रमुखास्तदा॥
prasavyaṁ cāpi taṁ cakrur ṛtvijo ’gni-citaṁ nṛpam
striyaś ca śoka-santaptāḥ kausalyā-pramukhās tadā
prasavyam ca api tam cakruḥ = circumambulated the; ṛtvijaḥ = the ṛtviks; agni-citam nṛpam = burning body of the king; striyaḥ = women; ca = and; śoka-santaptāḥ = the grief-stricken; kausalyā-pramukhāḥ = headed by Kausalyā; tadā = then.
The ṛtviks and the grief-stricken women headed by Kausalyā then circumambulated the burning body of the king.
Prasavyam ca indicates that they circumambulated from the [king’s] left and then from [his] right. It is obvious that Bharata also circumambulated.
