Chapter 76: Bharata Performs the Final Rites for Daśaratha
Text 2.76.21
क्रौञ्चीनामिव नारीणां निनादस्तत्र शुश्रुवे।
आर्तानां करुणं काले क्रोशन्तीनां सहस्रशः॥
krauñcīnām iva nārīṇāṁ ninādas tatra śuśruve
ārtānāṁ karuṇaṁ kāle krośantīnāṁ sahasraśaḥ
krauñcīnām = of the female krauñca birds; iva = resembling; nārīṇām = women; ninādaḥ = cries; tatra = at that; śuśruve = were heard; ārtānām = of distressed; karuṇam = piteous; kāle = time; krośantīnām = the cries; sahasraśaḥ = of the thousands.
At that time piteous cries of the thousands of distressed women were heard there, resembling the cries of the female krauñca birds.
