ततः प्रभातसमये दिवसेऽथ त्रयोदशे।
विललाप महाबाहुर्भरतः शोकमूर्च्छितः।
शब्दापिहितकण्ठस्तु शोधनार्थमुपागतः॥
चितामूले पितुर्वाक्यमिदमाह सुदुःखितः॥
tataḥ prabhāta-samaye divase ’tha trayodaśe
vilalāpa mahā-bāhur bharataḥ śoka-mūrcchitaḥ
śabdāpihita-kaṇṭhas tu śodhanārtham upāgataḥ
citā-mūle pitur vākyam idam āha suduḥkhitaḥ
tataḥ prabhāta-samaye = on the early morning; divase = day; atha = then; trayodaśe = of the thirteenth; vilalāpa = and lamented; mahā-bāhuḥ = the mighty-armed; bharataḥ = Bharata; śoka-mūrcchitaḥ = He became overwhelmed with grief; śabda-āpihita-kaṇṭhaḥ tu = with His throat filled with sounds of lamentation; śodhana-artham = to clean the place [of His father’s funeral]; upāgataḥ = came; citā-mūle = at the foot of the funeral pyre; pituḥ = to His father; vākyam = words; idam = the following; āha = He spoke; suduḥkhitaḥ = in great distress.
On the early morning of the thirteenth day, the mighty-armed Bharata came to clean the place [of His father’s funeral]. He then became overwhelmed with grief and lamented. With His throat filled with sounds of lamentation, He spoke the following words to His father at the foot of the funeral pyre in great distress.
Bharata came to clean the place of His father’s funeral, that is, to gather his bones since it will be mentioned later [in this chapter] that the remaining bones needed to be collected 3. It is seen in other Dharma-sūtras that the bones can be gathered even on the thirteenth day 4.
