Chapter 77: Bharata and Śatrughna Lament About Daśaratha’s Departure
Text 2.77.18
हीनो भ्रात्रा च पित्रा च शून्यामिक्ष्वाकुपालिताम्।
अयोध्यां न प्रवेक्ष्यामि प्रवेक्ष्यामि तपोवनम्॥
hīno bhrātrā ca pitrā ca śūnyām ikṣvāku-pālitām
ayodhyāṁ na pravekṣyāmi pravekṣyāmi tapo-vanam
hīnaḥ = for it is now without; bhrātrā ca = My brother; pitrā = My father; ca = and; śūnyām = devoid of; ikṣvāku-pālitām = that was maintained by Ikṣvākus; ayodhyām = Ayodhyā; na = not; pravekṣyāmi = I will enter; pravekṣyāmi = I will enter; tapaḥ-vanam = a forest dedicated to performance of austerities.
I will not enter Ayodhyā that was maintained by the Ikṣvākus for it is now without My brother and devoid of My father. I will enter a forest dedicated to performance of austerities.
