Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 79: Bharata Prepares to go With His Army to Meet Rāma
Text 2.79.12

न सकामां करिष्यामि स्वामिमां मातृगन्धिनीम्।
वने वत्स्याम्यहं दुर्गे रामो राजा भविष्यति॥

na sakāmāṁ kariṣyāmi svām imāṁ mātṛ-gandhinīm
vane vatsyāmy ahaṁ durge rāmo rājā bhaviṣyati

na = never; sakāmām kariṣyāmi = I will fulfill the wishes; svām = related to Me; imām = of this lady; mātṛ-gandhinīm = [though] she appears to be My mother; vane = forest [and]; vatsyāmi = will live; aham = I; durge = in the difficult; rāmaḥ = Rāma; rājā = the king; bhaviṣyati = will become.

I will never fulfill the wishes of this lady related to Me [though] she appears to be My mother. I will live in the difficult forest [and] Rāma will become the king.

Mātṛ-gandhinīm indicates that Bharata considered Queen Kaikeyī to be His mother just in name 2.

GLOSS. [The glossator reads mātṛ-gardhinīm instead of mātṛ-gandhinīm indicating that] Queen Kaikeyī wanted to be given the respect due to a mother.
