दातुं च तावदिच्छामि स्वर्गतस्य महीपतेः।
और्ध्वदेहनिमित्तार्थमवतीर्योदकं नदीम्॥
dātuṁ ca tāvad icchāmi svar-gatasya mahī-pateḥ
aurdhvadeha-nimittārtham avatīryodakaṁ nadīm
dātum = offer; ca = and; tāvat = in the meanwhile; icchāmi = I want; svaḥ-gatasya = who has departed to the heavens; mahī-pateḥ = to the king; aurdhvadeha-nimitta-artham = for his happiness in his next life; avatīrya = to get down; udakam = water; nadīm = to the river.
In the meanwhile, I want to get down to the river and offer water to the king who has departed to the heavens for his happiness in his next life.1
1 According to Vedic dharma, householders should try to benefit their parents even after the death of those parents. The entire system of varṇāśrama-dharma enlightens the materialists that they have been helped by so many persons in their lives and so they should reciprocate in service.
