viniḥśvasan vai bhṛśa-durmanās tataḥ
pramūḍha-saṁjñaḥ paramāpadaṁ gataḥ
śamaṁ na lebhe hṛdaya-jvarārdito
nara-rṣabho ’yūtha-gato yatha rṣabhaḥ
viniḥśvasan vai = sighing heavily; bhṛśa-durmanāḥ = His mind was in extreme distress; tataḥ pramūḍha-saṁjñaḥ = He lost His consciousness; parama-āpadam gataḥ = and so He was in an acute crisis; śamam = any relief; na = did not; lebhe = find; hṛdaya-jvara-arditaḥ = His heart was feverishly tormented; nara-ṛṣabhaḥ = the prince; ayūtha-gataḥ = separated from its herd; yathā-ṛṣabhaḥ = like a bull.
Sighing heavily, His mind was in extreme distress. He lost His consciousness and so He was in an acute crisis. His heart was feverishly tormented. The prince did not find any relief, like a bull separated from its herd.
In some manuscripts, nara-rṣabho yūtha-hato yatha rṣabhaḥ appears instead of nara-rṣabho ’yūtha-gato yatha rṣabhaḥ indicating that Bharata was like a bull whose herd had been destroyed.
He then met Guha [again]. This is noted in the next verse.
