गुहस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भरतो भृशमप्रियम्।
ध्यानं जगाम तत्रैव यत्र तच्छ्रुतमप्रियम्॥
गुहस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भरतो भृशमप्रियम्।
ध्यानं जगाम तत्रैव यत्र तच्छ्रुतमप्रियम्॥
guhasya = of Guha; vacanam = words; śrutvā = after hearing; bharataḥ = Bharata; bhṛśam = attentively; apriyam = the distressing; dhyānam jagāma = became filled with anxiety; tatra eva yatra = about; tat śrutam apriyam = the distresses He heard [from him].
After attentively hearing the distressing words of Guha, Bharata became filled with anxiety about the distresses He heard [from him].
1 Rāma’s and Lakṣmaṇa’s matting Their hairs signified that They had now firmly vowed to reside in the forest as understood in the scriptures. Bharata had thought earlier that there was some possibility of Rāmacandra returning to rule over the kingdom, but He knew very well about Śrī Rāma’s adherence to His vows and so almost lost His hope that Rāma might return to Ayodhyā now to sit on the throne and rule over the kingdom.
Tatraiva yatra also indicates that Bharata became filled with anxiety the moment He heard Guha’s distressing words. Bharata became overwhelmed in anxiety for [He realized that] He was now facing a crisis in accomplishing His mission.1
