Chapter 88: Bharata Laments About Rāma’s Predicament
Text 2.88.4
अजिनोत्तरसंस्तीर्णे वरास्तरणसञ्चये।
शयित्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रः कथं शेते महीतले॥
ajinottara-saṁstīrṇe varāstaraṇa-sañcaye
śayitvā puruṣa-vyāghraḥ kathaṁ śete mahī-tale
ajina-uttara-saṁstīrṇe = and overlaid by deerskin covers; vara-āstaraṇa-sañcaye = on beds furnished with invaluable spreads; śayitvā = who slept; puruṣa-vyāghraḥ = that prince; katham = how can; śete = sleep; mahī-tale = on the ground.
“How can that prince who slept on beds furnished with invaluable spreads and overlaid by deerskin covers sleep on the ground?
The deerskin referred to here pertains to deer such as the kadalī 1. “Beds” in the plural indicates that Rāma had several apartments--inner apartment, apartment in the top floor and so on--to suit winter, summer and so on. Deerskin covers were used as overlays because they were extremely soft.
