Chapter 88: Bharata Laments About Rāma’s Predicament
Text 2.88.9
वन्दिभिर्वन्दितः काले बहुभिः सुतमागधैः।
गाथाभिरनुरूपाभिः स्तुतिभिश्च परंतपः॥
vandibhir vanditaḥ kāle bahubhiḥ sūta-māgadhaiḥ
gāthābhir anurūpābhiḥ stutibhiś ca parantapaḥ
vandibhiḥ = professional reciters; vanditaḥ = would be praised; kāle = early in the morning; bahubhiḥ = by many; sūta-māgadhaiḥ = sūtas and māgadhas; gāthābhiḥ = songs; anurūpābhiḥ = through appropriate; stutibhiḥ = hymns; ca = and; parantapaḥ = Rāma who was intent on disciplining other kings.
“Rāma who was intent on disciplining other kings would be praised by many professional reciters, sūtas and māgadhas early in the morning through appropriate songs and hymns.
1 “Alone” means “practically alone” in this context.
This describes what used to happen after Rāma was woken up.
Through implication, Bharata asks, “How is it that He lay down on earth? And how is that He was woken up by hearing the roars of wild beasts? How does He live alone?”1
