Chapter 88: Bharata Laments About Rāma’s Predicament
Text 2.88.10
अश्रद्धेयमिदं लोके न सत्यं प्रतिभाति मा।
मुह्यते खलु मे भावः स्वप्नोऽयमिति मे मतिः॥
aśraddheyam idaṁ loke na satyaṁ pratibhāti mā
muhyate khalu me bhāvaḥ svapno ’yam iti me matiḥ
aśraddheyam = is unbelievable; idam = this; loke = in the world; na = does not; satyam = true; pratibhāti = seem; mā = to Me; muhyate = bewildered; khalu = certainly; me bhāvaḥ = I think that; svapnaḥ = is a dream; ayam iti = this; me = My; matiḥ = heart is.
“This is unbelievable in the world. It does not seem true to Me. My heart is certainly bewildered. I think that this is a dream.
“This is unbelievable in the world” means “I am seeing Rāma sleeping on a bed of grass and so on.” [In fact,] Bharata’s heart became bewildered when He heard about [these] activities of Rāma. “I think that this is a dream” means “I think that My hearing about these activities of Rāma is a dream.” He implies, “How else could the impossible have become possible?”
