Chapter 88: Bharata Laments About Rāma’s Predicament
Text 2.88.14
मन्ये साभरणा सुप्ता सीतास्मिञ्शयनोत्तमे।
तत्र तत्र हि दृश्यन्ते सक्ताः कनकबिन्दवः॥
manye sābharaṇā suptā sītāsmiñ śayanottame
tatra tatra hi dṛśyante saktāḥ kanaka-bindavaḥ
manye = I think; sābharaṇā = with her ornaments; suptā = slept; sītā = Sītā-devī; asmim = on this; śayana-uttame = best of the beds; tatra tatra hi = here and there; dṛśyante saktāḥ = can be seen; kanaka-bindavaḥ = because of particles of gold.
“I think Sītā-devī slept on this best of the beds with her ornaments because particles of gold can be seen sticking here and there.
That Sītā-devī had gone to sleep with her ornaments indicates that she didn’t remove her ornaments out of exhaustion due to [the travel on] the way. [The bed on which Sītā-devī had slept] is described as the “best of beds” because her husband had slept on it [and so] it was better than all other beds. Tatra tatra (“here and there”) indicates that particles of gold from her golden ornaments had got stuck in the grass.
