Chapter 88: Bharata Laments About Rāma’s Predicament
Text 2.88.16
मन्ये भर्तुः सुखा शय्या येन बाला तपस्विनी।
सुकुमारी सती दुःखं न विजानाति मैथिली॥
manye bhartuḥ sukhā śayyā yena bālā tapasvinī
sukumārī satī duḥkhaṁ na vijānāti maithilī
manye = I think that; bhartuḥ = of her husband; sukhā = was comfortable [for her]; śayyā = the bed; yena = because; bālā = younger; tapasvinī = the austere; sukumārī = very tender; satī = and chaste girl; duḥkham = any distress; na = did not; vijānāti = experience; maithilī = Maithilī.
“I think that the bed of her husband was comfortable [for her] because the austere, young, very tender and chaste girl Maithilī did not experience any distress.
Bharata points out that every lady sworn in chastity to her husband [in body, mind and words] would like the bed of her husband.
