Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 89: Bharata Crosses Gaṅgā and Reaches Prayāga
Text 2.89.3

जागर्मि नाहं स्वपिमि तमेवार्यं विचिन्तयन्।
इत्येवमब्रवीद्भ्रात्रा शत्रुघ्नोऽपि प्रचोदितः॥

jāgarmi nāhaṁ svapimi tam evāryaṁ vicintayan
ity evam abravīd bhrātrā śatrughno ’pi pracoditaḥ

jāgarmi = awake; na = not; aham = I am; svapimi = asleep; tam eva āryam = of noble Rāma; vicintayan = I have been absorbed in thinking; iti evam = thus; abravīt = said; bhrātrā = His brother; śatrughnaḥ = Śatrughna; api = also; pracoditaḥ = upon being urged.

Śatrughna told Bharata that He was absorbed in thinking about the same noble Rāma that Bharata was absorbed in thinking about. He was also awake [like Bharata].

In some manuscripts tathaivāryam appears instead of tam evāryam [but the meaning is the same].

Śatrughna was fixed in the ultimate stage [of spiritual service]. His absorption in the first stage [of spiritual service] was to please Bharata.1

NOTE. Service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead exists in nine forms:

śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam
arcanaṁ vandanaṁ dāsyaṁ sakhyam ātma-nivedanam
iti puṁsārpitā viṣṇau bhaktiś cen nava-lakṣaṇā
kriyeta bhagavaty addhā tan manye ’dhītam uttamam

“Hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name, form, qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of Lord Viṣṇu, remembering them, serving the lotus feet of the Lord, offering the Lord respectful worship with sixteen types of paraphernalia, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming His servant, considering the Lord one’s best friend, and surrendering everything unto Him (in other words, serving Him with the body, mind and words) — these nine processes are accepted as pure devotional service. One who has dedicated his life to the service of Kṛṣṇa through these nine methods should be understood to be the most learned person, for he has acquired complete knowledge.” (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.5.23-24)

Thinking about Lord Viṣṇu is smaraṇam, the third type of bhakti.2

Prabhupāda notes the significance of remembering the Supreme Lord thus:

The Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad confirms that the Supreme Lord, in whom everything is resting, can be realized only by those who engage constantly in thinking of Him. This constant thinking of Kṛṣṇa is smaraṇam, one of the methods of devotional service. It is only by devotional service to Kṛṣṇa that one can understand his position and get rid of this material body. (Bhagavad-gītā 10.12-13 purport)

1 Śatrughna was fixed on serving Bharata who was fixed on serving Rāma. Followers of Rāmānujācārya pleasingly inform the world of Vaiṣṇavas that while the first goal of life should be to attain unmotivated service to the Supreme Lord at all times, places and circumstances, the ultimate goal of life should be to attain unmotivated service to one who is engaged in such unmotivated service to the Supreme Lord at all times, places and circumstances. This verse points out that such an upgrade is an add-on, not a replacement.

2 It is important to note that a genuine Vaiṣṇava-śiṣya always serves Viṣṇu while serving a genuine Vaiṣṇava-guru. No genuine Vaiṣṇava-śiṣya will keep away from service to Viṣṇu while serving his Vaiṣṇava-guru for that is both useless and severely displeasing to both Viṣṇu and the genuine Vaiṣṇava-guru. Śatrughna, though a form of Viṣṇu Himself, here demonstrates this particular duty of a Vaiṣṇava-śiṣya. All aspirants for the perfection of pure devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead can take serious note of this.
