Chapter 90: Bharata Meets Bharadvāja Ṛṣi
Text 2.90.11-13

सुषुवे यममित्रघ्नं कौसल्या नन्दवर्धनम्।
भ्रात्रा सह सभार्यो यश्चिरं प्रव्राजितो वनम्॥

नियुक्तः स्त्रीनियुक्तेन पित्रा योऽसौ महायशाः।
वनवासी भवेतीह समाः किल चतुर्दश॥

कच्चिन्न तस्यापापस्य पापं कर्तुमिहेच्छसि।
अकण्टकं भोक्तुमना राज्यं तस्यानुजस्य च॥

suṣuve yam amitraghnaṁ kausalyā nanda-vardhanam
bhrātrā saha sabhāryo yaś ciraṁ pravrājito vanam

niyuktaḥ strī-niyuktena pitrā yo ’sau mahā-yaśāḥ
vana-vāsī bhavetīha samāḥ kila caturdaśa

kaccin na tasyāpāpasya pāpaṁ kartum ihecchasi
akaṇṭakaṁ bhoktu-manā rājyaṁ tasyānujasya ca

suṣuve = gave birth; yam amitraghnam = to that destroyer of enemies; kausalyā = Kausalyā; nanda-vardhanam = who increased her happiness; bhrātrā saha = with His brother; sabhāryaḥ = and wife; yaḥ = He; ciram = for a long time; pravrājitaḥ = was banished; vanam = to the forest; niyuktaḥ = was ordered; strī-niyuktena = who was ordered by a woman; pitrā = by His father; yaḥ asau mahā-yaśāḥ = that greatly illustrious one; vana-vāsī = a forest dweller; bhava iti = become; iha = now; samāḥ kila = years; caturdaśa = for fourteen; kaccit na = do You not; tasya = Rāma’s; apāpasya = sinless; pāpam kartum = to harm; iha = now; icchasi = want; akaṇṭakam = free from thorns; bhoktu-manāḥ = to enjoy; rājyam = kingdom; tasya = His; anujasya = younger brother Lakṣmaṇa; ca= and.

Do you not want to enjoy Rāma's kingdom free from thorns and harm His sinless younger brother Lakṣmaṇa now? Kausalyā gave birth to that destroyer of enemies who increased her happiness. He was banished to the forest for a long time with His brother and wife. That greatly illustrious one was ordered by His father who was ordered by a woman, “Now become a forest-dweller for fourteen years.”

GLOSS. [The sage intended to ask Bharata,] “You want to harm Rāma and His younger brother Lakṣmaṇa by killing Them so that [Your] kingdom becomes free from thorns, [isn’t it]?”
