Chapter 91: Bharadvāja’s Hospitality to Bharata, His Army and Family

राज्ञा च भगवन्नित्यं राजपुत्रेण वा सदा।
यत्नतः परिहर्तव्या विषयेषु तपस्विनः॥
rājñā ca bhagavan nityaṁ rāja-putreṇa vā sadā
yatnataḥ parihartavyā viṣayeṣu tapasvinaḥ
rājñā = a king; ca = and; bhagavan = O powerful sage; nityam = constantly; rāja-putreṇa = a prince; vā = and; sadā = always; yatnataḥ = carefully; parihartavyāḥ = avoid; viṣayeṣu = in their areas; tapasvinaḥ = the sages.
“O powerful sage, a king and a prince should always, constantly and carefully avoid the sages in their areas.1
1 This is a standard principle. Kṣatriyas should neither show off their power to nor disturb those who have properly dedicated their lives to achieving spiritual realization. This is an important point.
They should carefully avoid the sages in their areas, that is, they should not come in front of them with their armies.
GLOSS. Bharata mentions “and a prince” here, apprehending that the sage might ask Him, “But how are You the king?”
