Chapter 92: Bharata Departs for Citrakūṭa
Text 2.92.3
कच्चिदत्र सुखा रात्रिस्तवास्मद्विषये गता।
समग्रस्ते जनः कच्चिदातिथ्ये शंस मेऽनघ॥
kaccid atra sukhā rātris tavāsmad-viṣaye gatā
samagras te janaḥ kaccid ātithye śaṁsa me ’nagha
kaccit = did; atra = here; sukhā = happily; rātriḥ = the night; tava = You; asmat-viṣaye = in my āśrama; gatā = spend; samagraḥ = all; te = of Your; janaḥ = people [satisfied]; kaccit = were; ātithye = with [my] hospitality; śaṁsa = tell; me = me; anagha = O sinless one.
O sinless one, did You spend the night happily here in my āśrama? Were all of Your people [satisfied] with [my] hospitality? Tell me.
By addressing Bharata as a sinless one, Bharadvāja indicates that he had extended his hospitality just to test Bharata’s desire [to meet Rāma without being distracted by sense enjoyment]. The sage’s intention was to point out that in the absence of [genuine] devotional service to Rāma, one will have the propensities for sense enjoyment.
NOTE. Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī quotes the following scriptural verse in his comment to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.5.31:
viṣayāviṣṭa-cittānāṁ viṣṇv-āveśaḥ sudūrataḥ
vāruṇī-dig-gataṁ vastu vrajann aindrīṁ kim āpnuyāt
“The person absorbed in material enjoyment is very far from being absorbed in Lord Viṣṇu. How can a person going east catch something in the west?”
