यामिमां भगवन्दीनां शोकानशनकर्शिताम्।
पितुर्हि महिषीं देवीं देवतामिव पश्यसि॥
एषा तं पुरुषव्याघ्रं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम्।
कौसल्या सुषुवे रामं धातारमदितिर्यथा॥
yām imāṁ bhagavan dīnāṁ śokānaśana-karśitām
pitur hi mahiṣīṁ devīṁ devatām iva paśyasi
eṣā taṁ puruṣa-vyāghraṁ siṁha-vikrāntagāminam
kausalyā suṣuve rāmaṁ dhātāram aditir yathā
yām imām = the queen who is; bhagavan = O powerful one; dīnām = morose; śokānaśana-karśitām = who is emaciated due to fasting and anxiety; pituḥ hi = My father’s; mahiṣīm = chief queen; devīm = who resembles the deity; devatām iva = of religiosity; paśyasi = and whom you see here is; eṣā = this; tam puruṣa-vyāghram = Prince; siṁha-vikrāntagāminam = of a lionlike royal gait; kausalyā = Kausalyā-devī; suṣuve = gave birth to; rāmam = Rāma; dhātāram = to Viṣṇu, the [ultimate] creator; aditiḥ = Aditi [gave birth]; yathā = just as.
O powerful one, the queen who is morose, who is emaciated due to fasting and anxiety, who resembles the deity of religiosity and whom you see here is My father’s chief queen. This Kausalyā-devī gave birth to Prince Rāma of a lionlike royal gait just as Aditi [gave birth] to Viṣṇu, the [ultimate] creator.
1 Eṣa dhātā vidhātā ca appears in the Mahābhārata when Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi identifies Kṛṣṇa, who is nondifferent from Viṣṇu, as the [ultimate] creator: sa eṣa kṛṣṇo vārṣṇeyaḥ purāṇa-puruṣo vibhuḥ / āste harir acintyātmā krīḍann iva mahā-bhujaḥ; eṣa dhātā vidhātā ca saṁhartā caiva sātvataḥ / śrīvatsa-vakṣā govindaḥ prajāpati-patiḥ prabhuḥ (Mahābhārata 3.187.52-53).
Dhātāram [literally, “the creator”] refers to the [ultimate] creator Viṣṇu for He has been identified as such: eṣa dhātā vidhātā ca.1
In other words, Rāma’s mother Kausalyā was endowed with all auspicious qualities.
