सा प्रयाता महासेना गजवाजिरथाकुला।
दक्षिणां दिशमावृत्य महामेघ इवोत्थितः॥
वनानि तु व्यतिक्रम्य जुष्टानि मृगपक्षिभिः।
गङ्गायाः परवेलायां गिरिष्वपि नदीषु च॥
sā prayātā mahā-senā gaja-vāji-rathākulā
dakṣiṇāṁ diśam āvṛtya mahā-megha ivotthitaḥ
vanāni tu vyatikramya juṣṭāni mṛga-pakṣibhiḥ
gaṅgāyāḥ para-velāyāṁ giriṣv api nadīṣu ca
sā = that; prayātā = proceeded forth; mahā-senā = great army; gaja-vāji-ratha-ākulā = crowded with elephants, horses and chariots; dakṣiṇām diśam = towards the south; āvṛtya = the army then spread and; mahā-meghaḥ = a great cloud; iva = like; utthitaḥ = rising; vanāni tu = forests; vyatikramya = passed through; juṣṭāni = frequented; mṛga-pakṣibhiḥ = by deer and birds; gaṅgāyāḥ = of Gaṅgā; para-velāyām = [going past] the western bank; giriṣu api = amidst mountains; nadīṣu = rivers; ca = and.
That great army, crowded with elephants, horses and chariots, passed through forests frequented by deer and birds amidst the mountains and rivers. [Going past] the western bank of Gaṅgā, the army then spread towards the south like a great rising cloud and proceeded forth.
